Double Up 4 Vision Honorary Chairs
Thanks to the outstanding support of the following individuals and group, our first annual Double Up 4 Vision event was a huge success! As our Honorary Chairs set their sights on the current Double Up 4 Vision event, they're eager to hit the road and burn some rubber…they’ll meet all of YOU at the finish line!

As members of the Exploratory Committee for Double Up 4 Vision, Mark Carhart and Artie Elefant expressed their commitment early on to help raise awareness about vision loss, drive momentum for the event and fundraise. With a shared commitment and sense of purpose, the two men embarked on their Double Up 4 Vision journey. Not only did they participate as Team 6 in the 24 Hour Relay event, but they led a successful fundraising campaign and met their personal fundraising goal of $20,000.
More than their creativity and innovation, Mr. Carhart and Mr. Elefant brought the energy and enthusiasm that is of paramount importance to launching such an initiative. Artie expressed, “For people who are visually challenged, [Double Up 4 Vision] is a wonderful experience to team with a sighted person and be able to ride a bicycle.” They believed in the vision, invested in the dream, and together, their energy continues to inspire others!

Rita Calvo's granddaughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with aniridia and congential glaucoma at just a few weeks old. And in the six months after her initial diagnosis, Lauren received 11 surgeries to correct her vision. With the surgeries mounting, the Calvo family knew they needed help. That's when Rita found Lighthouse International's Early Intervention program, which helps children with visual impairments. "That changed everything
for us," said Rita. "It gave us an opportunity to realize that we're not alone."
The Calvo family started a Double Up 4 Vision team, appropriately named "Lauren's Heroes" and raised over $20,000 so other children like Lauren could continue to receive
services. Through Double Up 4 Vision and Lauren's work with the Early
Intervention program, a bond has been formed between the Calvo family
and the Lighthouse. "I feel like I'm home when I'm [at the Lighthouse],"
Rita said. "I've had that [feeling] from the first day I walked through
the doors."

The Young Leadership Committee (YLC) of Lighthouse International is a volunteer leadership group committed to supporting and promoting the Lighthouse's mission of fighting vision loss through prevention, treatment and empowerment. Consisting of young professionals under the age of 45, the YLC recruits participants from diverse backgrounds and industries who are eager to take on a leadership role in fundraising activities associated with Lighthouse International.
Last year, the YLC formed a Double Up 4 Vision team of tandem bike riders and walkers and raised over $18,000! Additionally, the group was named an event sponsor in recognition of their outstanding fundraising efforts.
